Preview 7th Rhythmic Gymnastics World Cup Final Benidorm (ESP)
Benidorm (ESP) FIG Office, October 2, 2008: The elite of international Rhythmic Gymnastics is converging in Benidorm to play the final act of the 2008 season, which was rich in events and twists. This Final is a kind of revenge of the Olympic jousts that are still in the memories of all those involved in the discipline.
Among the Individuals, all eyes are turned on the Beijing podium, towards Evgenia Kanaeva (RUS), the gold medal, Olga Kapranova (RUS), her dauphine, and Anna Bessonova (UKR), bronze medalist because of 75 thousandths of points! All three are here, ready to fight. The Benidorm and Beijing podiums could look alike, if the top trio is determined to maintain some distance from the other contenders.
Natalia Godunko (UKR), Aliya Garayeva (AZE), and Aliya Yussupova (KAZ), among the other hopefuls, have a chance to reach the podium and perhaps even to take away a trophy. A final is also an occasion to stand out among the best – an opportunity that Irina Risenson (ISR) will not fail to seize.
As for the groups, only 4 formations have responded to the call of the Final. It is certainly late in the season, and many groups have ceased their activities or are even preparing for the next cycle. Nonetheless Russia, Byelorussia, Ukraine, and Spain are present. The Spanish group will have its fans club on its side, willing to do anything to defend its colors. In Spain rhythmic is deeply rooted in tradition and the culture of gymnastics. The “senoritas” of the 1996 group were the first ones to win the first Olympic title in history. It was in Atlanta (USA). Since then, the discipline has maintained a growing popularity in their country.
Benidorm promises to be a great show.
The 2008 World Cup Final will be the last one for the discipline. From now, there will be a world championship every year, except during the Olympic year.
